Launched on 2 June 1961 as an informal political umbrella of SPA and the UMNO-MCA-MIC alliance, an initiative endorsed by Malaysia's then-ruling Alliance Party coalition, it became official two years later and adopted the symbol of Alliance Malaysia. In the 1963 General Election, SA was badly routed, precipitating the annoyance of Alliance Malaysia with PAP. This, along with other reasons, triggered Singapore's separation from Malaysia. In April 1965, SA was restructured into APS by its component parties before registering the new entity but did not contest further elections and became dormant since. On the other hand, the Malaysian Alliance, which governed its country since 1955, expanded into Barisan Nasional (National Front) in 1974 and governed for another 44 years until 2018.
