| A major splinter of PAP established by Lim Chin Siong and Dr Lee Siew Choh, drawing away more than half of PAP's resources, it is the strongest opposition to PAP ever. In 1966, its legislature representatives resigned their seats over what it proclaimed was Singapore's "phoney" independence and boycotted elections. Subsequently, it returned to the polls in 1972 but could no longer make a comeback into Parliament. In 1988, with its strength dwindled, its members merged with WP to strengthen the opposition and applied for dissolution. The application was denied as the party's constitution required the mandate of all its branches, of which none were left. Hence, the party was left dormant. |
