| Started as the Singapore branch of PMIP in Malaya, the latter originally UMNO Malaya's Ulama component known as the Pan-Malayan Islamic Association but seceded in 1951. A year after legislation was introduced in December 1966 to disallow Singapore parties from being affiliated to non-local parties, it changed name to AI. In the sixties, it came under the UNF alliance but by the eighties, it appeared in elections under on its party name. Its former Malaysia counterpart is known today as Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS). |
