PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS 2005
President S. R. Nathan, who earlier gave indications of retirement, decided a month before PE2005 to stand for office again. Once again, as the only candidate with a Certificate of Eligibility, he won uncontested, making this second walkover victory. Four other candidates were denied a Certificate, including Ooi Boon Ewe who also tried to run in PE1999 and was an independent candidate in GE2005. The most controversial was Andrew Kuan, a PAP member and former Chief Financial Officer of Jurong Town Corporation. Despite his credentials, his former employers came out in public to dismiss and discredit him as a non-performer. In the end, the Presidential Elections Committee ruled that he was still notches from being qualified to run. This was the first time an incumbent elected President ran for a second term and also marked two out of three Presidential Elections in history ending in a walkover. Polling day, scheduled for 27 August 2005 with overseas voting for the first time, did not take place.
Nomination day: 17 August 2005
Eligible voters: 2,113,540
