PRESIDENTIAL ELECTIONS 1993
This was the first time the President of Singapore was to be elected by the people. A former PAP Deputy Prime Minister was pitted against a "non-party" candidate, a former attorney-general. Although PAP's first-choice candidate was not under the PAP ticket and a few PAP ministers backed the second candidate, the results showed that a credible "opposition" candidate could garner a large chunk of support against a former top leader of the "almighty" ruling party. The main PAP-supported candidate won with a lower-than-expected share of votes.
