United Sabah National Organisation
Founded: 23 December 1961
Dissolved: 5 August 1993
Once the linchpin party of Sabah Alliance, which it joined in 1967 and helped form Sabah BN in 1973. In 1976, a split between president Mustapha Harun and secretary-general Harris Salleh led the latter to resign and form Berjaya. The new party defeated USNO in that year's state election and was co-opted into BN at national and state levels, leading USNO to quit Sabah BN. On 15 April 1984, USNO was fully expelled. Before the Malaysia General Election in 1986, it rejoined BN along with PBS, causing Berjaya to exit from the coalition. In 1991, USNO reunited with Berjaya to bring UMNO into Sabah. However, UMNO plotted the eventual de-registration of USNO two years later. Unhappy ex-USNO members, some who had joined Sabah UMNO including Mustapha, crossed over before the 1994 state election to PBS, which had reverted to opposition status. An offshoot, USNO Party or USNO Baru (New USNO) for short, was set up in 2011 and formed United Borneo Alliance with SAPP and STAR before its registration was approved on 28 August 2013, 20 years after the original party ceased to exist. In 2020, USNO Baru received a membership boost when two past leaders of the defunct USNO lent weight to it. They were former Malaysia Parliament Speaker, Pandikar Amin Mulia, who took over as chief and Harris who became its advisor.
