Social Democratic Party
Founded: May 1978
Dissolved: May 1988
Set up by former DAP stalwart Yeap Ghim Guan and several lawmakers dissatisfied with their party leaders, it was soon joined by another stalwart Fan Yew Teng who had clashed with the DAP leadership over the party's position on the Singapore PAP government's repression of dissidents. Before the 1986 Malaysia General Election, SDP, PAS, PSRM and NasMa attempted to set up a coalition named Harakah Keadilan Rakyat (People's Justice Movement) but it ended up as an informal pact for the polls. After the dissolution of SDP, most of its remnants returned to DAP, including Fan who returned in 1998, while others went on to join BN component parties or PSRM.
