PARLIAMENTARY GENERAL ELECTION 1968

This first Parliamentary GE saw the longest campaigning period ever yet the fastest time Parliament was convened after the GE - less than a month - and also the least number of seats contested in history. Following the resignation of 11 BS Members of Parliament and exodus of two BS MPs from Singapore to escape detention by the Internal Security Department (ISD), the legislature was left with only PAP MPs. With the exception of WP, opposition parties heeded the call of BS to boycott the GE on the grounds that Singapore's independence was "phoney". BS took issue with the fact that Parliament was not convened to discuss an important matter such as independence. Against this backdrop, another two records were set - for the first time, PAP returned to power on nomination day and for the first time, won all seats to return a single-party house.
