LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL GENERAL ELECTIONS 1951
The number of elected seats increased from six to nine since the last elections, with the remaining 13 comfortably in the hands of the British colonial government. Four non-elected seats were added after the elections, to be filled via nominations by the Singapore Governor. Popular Malay politician Mansor bin Adabi, husband of Maria Hertogh, the young woman whose parentage controversy sparked a racial riot between the Dutch and Muslims in Singapore a year ago, withdrew his decision to contest the elections. Again, voting was not compulsory and only British subjects were registered.
