PARLIAMENTARY BY-ELECTION 1992

This only BE for a GRC was held firstly, for Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong to inject new blood into PAP's ranks, secondly, to keep his promise of allowing WP chief J. B. Jeyaretnam to contest an election after his ten-year ban and thirdly, for PM Goh to court another fresh mandate after last year's General Election saw PAP losing an unprecedented four seats. On nomination day, WP failed to file its nomination due to the tardiness of a candidate but three other opposition parties entered the fray, including the main opposition SDP, which wanted to unveil its newly-acquired "trump card" - National University of Singapore lecturer Dr Chee Soon Juan, who would later become SDP's leader under controversial circumstances.
