PARLIAMENTARY BY-ELECTION 1992
This BE was held firstly for Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong to inject new leaders into PAP's ranks, secondly to keep his promise of allowing WP leader J. B. Jeyaretnam to contest an election after a ten-year ban and thirdly for PM Goh to court another mandate after last year's GE saw PAP losing an unprecedented four seats. On nomination day, WP failed to file nominations but three other opposition parties entered the fray, including main Parliamentary opposition SDP with a newly-acquired "trump card" - NUS lecturer Dr Chee Soon Juan, who would later become the party's leader.
