LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY BY-ELECTION 1961 (II)

The death of PAP Assemblyman Baharuddin Mohammed Ariff precipitated this by-elections. David Marshall's victory marked his return and WP's first appearance in the House. In the meantime, Ong Eng Guan mustered two former PAP assemblymen to form UPP while Speaker A. P. Rajah joined the newly-formed SA (alliance of SPA, UMNO, MCA and MIC), ending the presence of independent Assemblymen in the Legislature.
