LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY BY-ELECTION 1961 (I)

PAP Minister Ong Eng Guan was expelled from PAP after several severe open disputes with his cabinet colleagues, including over the abolishment of the City Council of which he was mayor. Issuing a challenge to PAP in the Legislative Assembly including filing 16 resolutions, he resigned and recontested his Hong Lim seat. Two other PAP Assemblymen also joined him in leaving PAP but did not vacate their seats. After this, the PAP Government's majority in the House was slashed from 17 to 14.
