CITY COUNCIL BY-ELECTION 1958
This by-elections was called when WP City Councillor Chang Yuen Tong resigned his Council seat, which according to Lee Kuan Yew of PAP years later when he became Prime Minister, was because he met communist leader Fang Chuang Pi (also dubbed "the Plen") prior to the by-elections. The then opposition leader challenged him to "prove his credentials", and the latter arranged for Chang's resignation, whom he claimed was part of the communist sanctum.
