LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY BY-ELECTION 1957

David Marshall, who resigned as Chief Minister on 7 June 1956 after his initiated talks with the British authorities broke down, challenged opposition leader Lee Kuan Yew, to resign and recontest their respective constituencies. The latter accepted and filed his nomination but Marshall opted to retire from politics, pressured by the possibility of an electoral bloodshed. Lee was successfully returned in his seat. In the other, LF fielded another candidate in Marshall's place but victory went to LSP, a new party formed by the merger of PP and DP, which was trying to stage a comeback and took this BE opportunity. SMU was no longer part of the UMNO-MCA alliance and went on its own.
