LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY BY-ELECTIONS 1957
Ex-Chief Minister David Marshall challenged opposition leader Lee Kuan Yew to resign and recontest their respective constituencies, a challenge the latter accepted. Lee filed his nominations but Marshall opted to retire from politics, pressured by the possibility of an electoral bloodshed. LSP, a new political party formed by the consolidation of both PP and DP who were trying for a comeback, took this opportunity. Lee was successfully returned in his seat and in the other, LF fielded another candidate in Marshall's place but victory went to LSP.
